Under a giant statue of Diego Maradona, Napoli fans celebrated their first ever Serie A title on Thursday. They shared their joy by singing songs, jumping excitedly and setting off fireworks. It was going on, the supporters themselves were on the field as players. On the other side of the city where Maradona's 'iconic' stadium is located, other supporters were paying tribute to their former Argentinian player.
Napoli won the league title twice in 1987 and 1990 under Maradona. This is how Napoli won the top division title in Italy. This success was achieved after 33 years. After Roma won the title in 2001, Napoli, located south of the traditional football capital of Milan and Turin, won the league for the first time.
