Kindness is Compasssion in action

On a cold winter night, I was walking with my friend who out of nowhere removed her overcoat and gave it to a seven-year-old girl sitting on the streets, shivering in the chilly weather. She said that it made her feel good when she helped others. Not a big deal, right? Well, this is kindness.

Kindness is an action driven by our innate feelings of compassion. Thus, it is compassion in action. It need not be as big as buying a flat for the homeless who can't afford a single meal, and it needn't be something as moving as feeding hundreds of orphans. It includes driving away the loneliness of old people, bringing smiles to children's faces, sympathizing with the disabled, empathizing with ones who lost their loved ones, and most importantly– treating the people you dislike with kindness. Being compassionate with your friends and family is quite easy but doing the same with your so-called 'enemies' and strangers is a task we all need to master.

If you spend even one minute of your day doing an act of kindness – it is enough! If you are not sure what to start with, go to google and search "kind acts examples" and voila! You will get a list of 101 ways to be compassionate toward people. Bring your mother flowers, buy a warm meal to give to a homeless person, donate unused items to charity, say kind words, show gratitude – do anything that brings a smile to the other person's face.

Someone has rightly said that carrying out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, is safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you. And why not?

Be kind to yourself and show self-compassion because then only can you reflect the same to others. At the end of the day, we all are humans – same species, same subspecies, and same heart. No matter how different the person in front of you is – being kind is a duty that needs to be thought of as an instinct and proof of you being a human.

In the end, it is up to the human race to form partnerships for ensuring peace and prosperity among the people and our planet. This is precisely what Sustainable Developmental Goal No. 17 compels us to achieve. It is about strengthening and improvising our resources with a global partnership. Kindness and compassion breed harmony which in turn encourages unity and global partnerships. We need to realize that we all are global citizens working towards making Earth a better place to live a sustained life in the future by incorporating compassion in our daily lives.

In these tough times of the Russia-Ukraine war, bio warfare, insecurity, hunger, inequality – we need hope. And these small human acts gives us the hope of having a better future tomorrow.

So, what are we waiting for? Let's make kindness the new norm!
