Howto Turn Off Automatic Updates on Windows 10
There are a few ways to turn off automatic updates on Windows 10.
Method 1: Use the Settings app
- Open the Settings app by pressing Windows+I.
- Click on Update & Security.
- In the left-hand menu, click on Windows Update.
- Click on the Pause updates for 7 days button.
This will pause automatic updates for 7 days. To turn them off permanently, you can follow the steps below.
- Click on the Advanced options link.
- In the Choose when updates are installed section, select the Notify me of available updates but let me choose whether to download and install them option.
- Click on the Save changes button.
Method 2: Use the Services app
- Press Windows+R to open the Run box.
- Type services.msc and press Enter.
- In the Services list, scroll down and find the Windows Update service.
- Right-click the Windows Update service and select Properties.
- In the Startup type drop-down menu, select Disabled.
- Click on the Apply button and then on the OK button.
This will disable the Windows Update service, which will prevent automatic updates from being downloaded and installed.
Method 3: Use the Group Policy Editor
This method is only available on Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.

- Press Windows+R to open the Run box.
- Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
- In the Group Policy Editor, navigate to the following path:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
- Double-click the Configure Automatic Updates policy.
- In the Settings section, select the Disabled option.
- Click on the OK button.
This will disable automatic updates using the Group Policy Editor.
Note: Disabling automatic updates is not recommended, as it can leave your computer vulnerable to security risks. If you do choose to disable automatic updates, it is important to manually download and install security updates as soon as they are available.
