CULTURE OF KOREA

The Korean language and THEIR CULTURE

The Korean language is the countrywide language of both North and South Korea. Korean is among the most popular languages of today’s generation after the success of BTS (Bangtan Boys), a South Korean boy band, who got famous because of their song, “Dynamite”, and K-dramas that have become popular with shows like Squid Games, Crash Landing on You and Descendants of the Sun on streaming app Netflix.

The traditional dress known as hanbok (한복, 韓服) has been worn since ancient times. The hanbok consists of a shirt (jeogori) and a skirt (chima). According to social status, Koreans used to dress differently, making clothing an important mark of social rank. Costumes were worn by the ruling class and the royal family. These upper classes also used jewelry to distance themselves from the ordinary people1

Korean culture is deeply influenced by Buddhism as it has become an inherent aspect of Korean culture, including the secular Korean traditions followed by the non-Buddhist Koreans. A 2005 government survey indicated that about a quarter of South Koreans identified as Buddhist1.
