CONTRIBUTION OF SOME TAXONOMIST
Aristotle (384-322 B.C.): He was a great Greek Philosopher. He is the "Father of Biology and Father of Zoology". He classified living organisms on the basis of few morphologically similar features of organisms; into Plants and Animals. He also classified plants into three groups as herbs, shrubs and trees while animals as terrestrial, aquatic and aerial. He written a book "Aristoria Animalia'".
Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778): He is the "Father of classification or Taxonomy". He classified living organisms into two kingdoms; Plantae and Animalia. He classified about 5,900 species, 1336 genera and 24 classes of plants based on number and size in his book "Species Plantarum" in 1753. He also listed about 4326 species of animals in his book "Systema Naturae" (First edition,1735). The system of naming organisms with two names; specific name and generic name, was introduced by Linnaeus. This system is known as "Binomial System of Nomenclature". Similarly, "Genera Plantarum" (1737) and "Philosophia Botanica" (1751) were also published by Linnaeus.
Theophrastus (370-285 B.C.): He is the "Father of Botany". He classified plants the basis of texture, as herbs, under-shrubs, shrubs and trees. On the basis of life-span, he classified plants as annuals, biennials and perennials. He followed the artificial system of classification.
